The Australian government's home affairs minister, Bob Debus, wants a Republic by 2010, which drew cheers from many delegates at a government-led summit, "Australia 2020", on the future of Australia. The summit started on Saturday in Canberra with the aim of plotting the country's future path. Foreign minister Stephen Smith said a split from the British monarchy was "inevitable".
The Labour government and the Conservative party have both been reported as saying becoming a republic is not a high priority and will happen in "due course."
Aboriginal issues and climate change are also on the agenda.
